Presets
Description
Pedals like the EP Booster strip the delay from an Echoplex and keep the idiosyncrasies of that preamp. This H9 preset basically does the same with the Tape Echo algorithm. There are two sounds in there, one at each end of the ribbon controller. 8/30/2022

Pedals like the EP Booster strip the delay from an Echoplex and keep the idiosyncrasies of that preamp. The Strymon Deco does this and also offers some more grit, flanging, and/or doubling. This H9 preset (and the related 1GRIT ENGINE) basically does the same with the Tape Echo algorithm. There are two sounds in there, one at each end of the ribbon controller. 8/30/2022

This H9 preset was inspired by Jimi Hendrix's And The Gods Made Love from his Electric Ladyland album. You "play" it with an expression pedal, the hotknob, or your guitar but it is intended to be inherently unstable regardless of what you do. The only way to stop it or fade it out is to deactivate the preset with the left footswitch or turn the volume all the way down by holding the left footswitch and then turning the volume all the way down with the hotknob. 8/30/2022

use an expression pedal for some fun - quick licks and a swoop of the pedal get some weird delayed harmonies

Echo I use for the solo on Band of Skulls - I Know What I Am. Pretty wet with only one or two noticeable repeats. I use it with a Les Paul (Bridge) to EHX Soul Food to H9 to Fender Deluxe Reverb. YouTube video is to actual song, not preset. (Solo starts around 2:05.)

Chorus effect I use when I play funk/disco tracks. Can be subtle or drastic according to taste.

Ok, this is not what you think of when you think "looper", but technically, it uses many of the same concepts. The results are more along the lines of resonant delays and pitch shifting with dark, foreboding undertones. Call it a lo-fi reverb, metallic pipe delay, tuned / detuned resonator, flange mangler ... it's all about the short delay times with heavy feedback.
Expression Pedal Heel: Delay A = 50 ms.
Expression Pedal Heel: Delay B = 0 ms.
Expression Pedal Heel: Wow = 10
Expression Pedal Heel: Flutter = 0
Expression Pedal Toe: Delay A = 0 ms.
Expression Pedal Toe: Delay B = 50 ms.
Expression Pedal Toe: Wow = 0
Expression Pedal Toe: Flutter = 10
Shift, bend, and twist resonant delays. Wild flanging & filter matrix FX with sweeps.
Latch Repeat for frozen resonance that can be swept for weird stutter / hetereodyne FX.
Unlatch Repeat for fading decays (full toe down EXP PED for near-instant decay / gating.
EXP PED swaps delay times + Wow / Flutter settings for resonance & pitch change FX.

Here is "Space Echo 1" my first user patch to share with everyone here. It is based on the gorgeous warm analog like sound of the Time Factor's Tape Echo algorithm. I created this patch taking reference from the sonic characteristics of actual Roland RE Series of tape echo machines that I service including the RE201 and RE501. Hope you enjoy it.
Tips: * Use an Expression Pedal as it's mapped to the Saturation, Flutter and Filter parameters. In the 'Heel' position it replicates the sound of a pretty well maintained but old machine, in the 'TOE' position the sound is a combination of a worn, dirty and slightly misaligned playback head with a slightly wonky motor and the tape is old and easily saturated. Also feel free to swap or include Exp control for the "Wow" parameter. Adjust the "Wet Mix" Knob to find the right dose for your application. After playing around with this basic template save your preferred or fav variants and feel free to experiment with re mapping the Expression Pedal and Hot Switch for Delay Speed and Feedback controls to get into some Dubby Tape Echo Oscillation Feedback fun. Suitable for all solo instruments or full mix use.

This preset is more of a sound design tool than a straight-up looper. Good for industrial ambient loops, or less extreme pitch bending techniques. It's set up for runaway feedback conditions, so use the Active / Bypass switch to tame any unwanted buildup or hiss regeneration. I'm running in stereo, so the results may differ when mixed to mono.
The image below shows the expression pedal set to midpoint (equal delay mix and delay time values for A & B). Quick Tip: To dial in exact values in H9 Control (Windows), hold the CTRL key while adjusting, or double-click on many parameter values to type in values.
Expression Pedal Heel: Delay Mix = A10 + B 0
Expression Pedal Heel: Delay A = 3000 ms.
Expression Pedal Heel: Delay B = 2500 ms.
Expression Pedal Toe: Delay Mix = A 0 + B10
Expression Pedal Toe: Delay A = 2500 ms
Expression Pedal Toe: Delay B = 3000 ms.
Pitchbending FX (using expression pedal) inside infinite looping with runaway oscillation.
Imagine performing studio tape flanging by tossing sandbags at the reels.
The Repeat switch allows loop locking with some added effects & FX limitations.
EXP PED = Slow/short throw: slight bend manipulation. Long/fast throw: extreme bends.
Active / Bypass switch for instant Stop - Restart - Chopped Loop Input effects.

This approximation of the Strymon Deco offers some more grit, flanging, chorus doubling, and/or slapback with the idiosyncrasies of a tape delay. Using the expression pedals to stop at 2ms, 14ms, 40ms, 90ms, and 157ms you have five different sounds in one preset. Adjust Time, Saturation, and Mix to taste. 11/26/2022
Description
Expression Pedal Heel: Delay B = 15/16
Expression Pedal Heel: Feedback A = 75%
Expression Pedal Heel: Feedback B = 75%
Expression Pedal Toe: Delay B = 1/4
Expression Pedal Toe: Feedback A = 100%
Expression Pedal Toe: Feedback A = 100%
Phase-offset loops - a heavy dose of pitch wobble - and long (but not infinite) decays.
Freeze for effect manipulations with the Repeat switch. Different FX with latch / unlatch.
EXP PED offsets Delay B, increases feedback to infinite, + shifts "tape speeds" up & back.
